Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 20th, 2012   –   On Friday, September 7, businesses in the Virgin Islands are encouraged to observe Company Wellness Day as part of Caribbean Wellness Day activities – an occasion where communities unite to promote and maintain healthy lifestyles.

Speaking on the GIS Report, Coordinator of Health Promotion Services, Ms. Ivy George said, “A number of people spend most of their time at work. As such, we want to mobilise companies on Friday, September 7, to coordinate activities to promote wellness in the workplace.”

“Healthy employees mean productive companies,” Ms. George said, as she provided suggestions for promoting workplace wellness. These suggestions include using the company’s bulletin board to issue wellness tips to employees; putting out a fruit bowl instead of candy dish, encouraging employees to take the stairs and introducing portion control and healthier food choices at company functions.

Furthermore, businesses can reduce the amount of alcohol provided at work functions; and enforce national regulations on seat-belt and cell-phone use for employees when driving company vehicles. Additional resources on employee wellness can be found online from Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization websites.

Ms. George also shared that the Ministry hopes to issue a Company Wellness Framework to guide wellness policies in the workplace. The framework will cover topics such as Providing a Supportive Workplace Environment, Education, Skills Building and Community Involvement.

Company Wellness Day is one of the initiatives being introduced to observe Caribbean Wellness Day spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Social Development.

Companies participating in Company Wellness Day on September 7 are asked to email photographs of their activities to kjeffers@gov.vg

This is the sixth year that the Territory will be observing Caribbean Wellness Day. The Ministry of Health and Social Development endeavours to provide leadership that promotes health, social well being and a safe environment.
