CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, August 22nd 2012 - Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry has warned residents that it is important that they keep safe and stay updated with the latest on Tropical Storm Isaac. He issued the advisory during a public broadcast made on Wednesday afternoon as residents braced themselves for the approaching storm.

The Hon. Parry advised inhabitants to monitor the progress of the storm, and stay abreast of the watch, by listening to the radio, television or by visiting the Nevis Disaster Management website,
    www.nevisdm.com.

“If you follow the Nevis Disaster Management website it will keep you informed, and put you in a better position to know what is going on with the storm, and assist with keeping you and those close to you safe,” said the Premier.

At 5:00pm AST, the center of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near Latitude 16.0 North and Longitude 61.2 West. Isaac is moving toward the West near 22 mph (35 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the center of Isaac should move through the Leeward Islands during the next few hours.

The Premier also advised residents that Tropical Storm Isaac is not a hurricane at this time, and posed no immediate major threat to the island.  “At the nearest point, the storm will be 50-60 miles away,” he said.

“Persons in low lying areas are asked to take all precautionary measures, and to ensure that the ghauts closest to your home are cleaned, as unkempt ghauts can cause flooding and severe blockage,” stated the Premier.

He said that the island might receive up to 4 to 8 inches of rain, which may cause flooding in some areas due to heavy rainfall.

He concluded that residents of Nevis have been through this exercise before, yet he cautioned persons to be ready and look out for one another.

“Be safe, stay at home and may God bless us all,” said the Hon. Joseph Parry.
