SKELEC explains electricity outages

    Apologises for inconvenience

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OVER the past few weeks, residents on St. Kitts have been experiencing a number of power outages, most being island-wide and citizens have been questioning the reason behind this unexpected loss of power.

The St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) has given a reason for those unexpected power losses, and is asking the public to bear with them as they seek to resolve these issues.

SKNVibes spoke with SKELEC's Public Relations Officer, Gawain Fraites, who explained that the island-wide outages, as well as the sporadic outages that the residents on the Western end of the island have been facing, are due to a number of issues.

He conveyed, "The island-wide outages that we have been having are due to generator trips at the Power Plant. We are looking at the issues that caused the trips and we are working on them. We hope to have the issue rectified soon".

He went on to state that the last power outage that happened on Tuesday (Sept. 18) on the Western side of the island was due to lightning, which he said tripped a few feeders causing the power to be knocked out.

Fraites explained that SKELEC is looking into the sporadic outages that the residents between Saddlers going East to Newton Ground have been experiencing. These outages, he said, are due to a fault in the lines.

"We are tracing the lines from White Gate to Le Vallee to find the fault and fix it," he explained.

Fraites apologised for the unexpected outages and for any inconvenience that these may have caused noting that the Company is carefully looking into the issues.

"We realise that these outages have been a bother to our consumers, we understand their frustration and we regret and apologise for any inconvenience which the interruption in electricity supply may cause.

"We are studying very carefully what the problems might be, and we are putting measures in place to step by step approach all these problems and try to solve them," Fraites said.
