12th October - Celebration of the International Day For Disaster Reduction (IDDR)

    CHARLESTOWN Nevis, September 28th, 2012  -- The UN General Assembly designated 13th October as the date to celebrate the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) (resolution 64/200, 21 December 2009).

     

    This year IDDR will be observed by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) on Friday 12th October 2012. The theme "Women and Girls - the [in]Visible Force of Resilience".

     

    IDDR is the most widely celebrated global day for raising awareness about what we can all do to reduce our risk to disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, droughts, fires, and tsunamis.

     

    The Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) in conjunction with the Premiers Ministry and other stakeholders will celebrate the importance of Women and Girls as the pillars of resilience within our communities.

     

    List of activities leading to the date

     

    • Variety Concert at the Shiloh Baptist Church Thursday 4th October 2012 @ 6:30pm

     


     • Panel Discussions 8th October, 2012, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm @ Choice 105.3 FM

     

    • March Pass from Cultural Center to Memorial Square Friday 12th October 2012 @ 3:30pm

     

    • Free StepUP for Disaster Risk Reduction T-shirt will be provided to the few marchers from public and private sectors.

     

    • All Women are encouraged to wear the StepUp for Disaster Risk Reduction T-shirt on Friday 12th October to commemorate the IDDR 2012.
