Communications ministry works on information and communications policy

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 3rd, 2012   -  As part of the benefits derived from being affiliated with the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), the British Virgin Islands (BVI) will soon be working on an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Policy that will establish clear specific goals for ICT, enable national development and clarify Government policy on the use of technology.

    At a recent press conference Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool welcomed the Secretary General for the CTU, Ms. Bernadette Lewis. “I am pleased to have the Secretary General of the CTU grace us with her presence,” Minister Vanterpool said during his remarks. “The CTU will be assisting the BVI in the development of a national ICT Policy and will also be partnering with us on our renewable energy initiatives which are one of our Ministry’s key areas for work plan development,” the Minister disclosed.

     

    During her remarks the Secretary General said “I count it a privilege to re-establish our relationship with the Ministry of Communications and Works,” as she explained the role of the CTU. “The CTU was established in 1989 by Caricom Heads of Government to help in the coordination of the development of telecommunication networks, the formulation of policy for the development of the telecommunications sector across the region and to act in an advisory role to supports government.”

     

    Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s (TRC) Chief Executive Officer Mr. Guy Malone spoke about how the affiliation with the CTU enhanced telecommunications locally. “I am very thankful for the support that the CTU has given the TRC over the years.

    The TRC is looking forward to a continued fruitful relationship with the CTU as we partner to develop new strategies and policies for improving the telecommunication industry in the BVI.

     

    The press conference, which was held by the Ministry of Communications and Works and the TRC aimed at educating the community on the work of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union and how the Territory is benefiting as a member of the regional institution.

     

    The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission remains committed to protecting the interest of users of telecommunication service and promoting and regulating the development of the telecommunications sector in the Virgin Islands.
