Ministry of Community Develop Celebrates Month of Older Persons

By: Ministry of Social Development, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, 5th October 2012:    Committed to ensuring that our older persons continue to enjoy a life of dignity the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs is once again celebrating the Month of Older Persons in October.

Under the theme, ‘Longevity: Getting and Staying Active in Later Years’, older persons during the month of October will be engaged in a number of activities including church service at the Dieppe Bay Methodist Church on October 7th , seniors’ socials in various communities,   Senior Tea Party and Old Time Fashion Show  on  October 20th and the annual March on Downtown Basseterre on October 26th.

Many older persons usually look forward to the month of October, as it is a time when the Nation celebrates with them their longevity and public awareness on the rights of older persons is heightened.   It is a time for old friendships to be renewed and new friendships to form.  Our older persons receive reassurance that they are valuable to us and essential to the wellbeing of our social and cultural fabric.

Since its launch, the month of older persons has expanded significantly and activities for older persons have now been incorporated in every quarter, as it is essential that we continue working daily to eliminate age discrimination and return to the practices of our African ancestors, where older persons are revered, and continue to display leadership in their families and communities.

The Ministry invites all citizens to join us this month in engaging our older persons and promoting active ageing of all citizens.
