The donated items

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Dr. William Connor Primary School yesterday (Oct. 4) received a generous donation of kitchen utensils that will be used to assist some students in the school's Home Economics Programme.

The items included baking pans, strainers, spatulas, serving plates, a hand cake mixer, a toaster and table cloths and they were donated by the Inspirational Baptist Church Ministry and the Church's Greeters Ministry, Hamilton County Missionary Society among others.

One of the teachers, Ruth Duporte, explained how the donation came about. She said it was as a result of the assistance of Peace Corps representative, Millicent Nash, who teaches remedial reading at the school.

"We are in the process of revamping our kitchen. Miss Nash is a Peace Corps representative and she also does some work at the school, and she asked us to put together a list of items that we will need for the kitchen and she would reach out to her sister's missionary group in the United States and see how they can help.

"She was given a list of items last school year and she said that her sisters will be coming to St. Kitts this school year and that her sister along with her will put together some items and they are now here."

Principal Valencia Syder graciously thanked the Missionary Society for their heartfelt contribution towards the upgrading of the school.

She said: "On behalf of the students, staff and parents of the Dr. William Connor Primary School, I would like to express profound gratitude to the members of the Inspiration Baptist Church Ministry and others for their very generous and timely contribution although we would not be using the items right away because we still have to get the kitchen in a state of readiness, but we are still very thankful as the items will come in handy when we officially begin our Home Economics Programme."

Corrine Kinebrew, a missionary member, said that when participating in missionary work, it is always good to make contact with and get to know the persons whom they are assisting and that that is one of the reasons they decided to pay the school a visit and deliver the goods personally.

"This is not a one-way thing; this is a relationship that will continue to develop. We will help them in any way they see we can help them," she said.

The Programme is a new project the school is venturing into which, according to the Principal, Valencia Syder, will assist the children from grades three to six in the basics of cooking, washing, and ironing.

"We are aiming to have the children learn to do things for themselves," she said.

The Programme is expected to kick off in the next school term.
