BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – REPORTS reaching SKNVibes state that two persons died this afternoon (Oct. 7) following a plane crash at the VC Bird International Airport in Antigua.

This media house contacted the Antigua Observer Radio and was told that a nine-seater Fly Montserrat Islander aircraft, flight number 107, crashed at about 4:00 p.m. during takeoff at the airport.

A source at the radio station said that two persons, including the pilot, had died during the crash and two others were hospitalised at the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre. However, unconfirmed reports indicate that one of them succumbed to their injuries.

According to Caribarena Antigua, early reports indicate that the pilot was cleared for take-off by the Control Tower, but that the plane crashed while taking-off.

Reports suggest that weather conditions may have been a factor in the unfortunate incident, as there were heavy rains, thunder and lightning during the time of the crash.

A release from LIAT’s Corporate Communications Specialist, Desmond Brown, stated that management of the airline wishes to advise its customers and the general public that it was forced to suspend flights into and out of Antigua due to the temporary closure of the airport and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

The airport has since been reopened.

More on this tragedy as details unfold.
