ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 8th, 2012   - “Let’s do our part, don’t give fire a place to start”. This is the theme for this year’s Fire Safety Awareness Week which will be observed in the Territory from October 7-14.

This year, the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service is celebrating 26 years of educating the community on the importance of reducing vulnerability to fire hazards.

Station Officer Mr. Tyronne Caddle told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “Our theme speaks to education and prevention with a focus on fire safety planning and practice. These components are essential to the preservation of life and property.”

According to Mr. Caddle, Fire Safety Week is important because it gives fire officers an opportunity to interact and to share their knowledge and experience with the community and allows the community to see and appreciate the role of fire officers while serving as a reminder of how fires can cause devastation and destruction to life and property.

Fire Safety Awareness Week will feature a number of activities including open house, drill competition, sporting activities, a fun walk and beach picnic.

Chief Fire Officer Mr. Zebalon McLean sent a message of community participation. He said, “We encourage the public to celebrate with us. Bring the children to see the fire trucks.

Ask questions you always wanted to ask. Get some valuable advice that can be used in your home and your place of business. Come and meet the officers, in person, who work day and night to protect you and your property.”

The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to protecting life and property from the ravages of fire and other natural and manmade hazards.
