Winners of Human Rights ESSAY Competition rewarded

Winners of Essay Competition with John Hassell (UNAIDS), Prime Minister Right Honourable Dr Denzil Douglas and Minister of Health Honorable Marcella Liburd.

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, October 10th, 2012  --  In an elegant prize-giving awards ceremony held at the Ocean Terrace Inn on Thursday, October 4th, the winners of the UNAIDS-sponsored Equality for ALL Human Rights Campaign Essay Competition in St Kitts-Nevis were rewarded for their efforts.  Nearly thirty (30) essays were received from both islands, and these were found to be of a very high standard.

     

    The participants were divided into three (3) categories, and wrote on topics that discussed solutions to ensure equality in the Federation, ways in which music artistes can promote human rights, and the ill effects of discrimination on human development.

     

    In the end, the following entrants were adjudged the winners in each category:
    9 – 12 years:  First  -  Ceondra Edwards;  Second  -  Kyler K Sutton;  Third  -  Tau Omowale

     

    13 – 17 years:  First  -  Yvado Simmons;  Second  -  Leanne Walters;  Third  -  Annick Bedford

     

    18 and over:   First  -  O’Neil Simpson;  Second  -  Patrick Walters;  Third  -  Boris Connor

     

    The winners were all pleased and excited at receiving the latest gadgets as prizes.  First place winners in each category received Apple iPads, second place winners received Samsung Galaxy tablets, and third place winners received Acer Iconia tablets.  Additionally, all entrants received Equality for All t-shirts.

     

    The gathering was addressed by Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Health, Honorable Marcella Liburd, and UNAIDS representative Mr John Hassell who traveled from Trinidad especially for the occasion.  They all gave inspiring remarks and encouraged the participants to become advocates of human rights in our Federation.

     

    The Ministry of Health, St Kitts-Nevis joins the organizing committee in extending heartiest congratulations to the winners, and takes this opportunity to thank all the participants in this essay competition.
