ROADTOWN Tortla BVI, October 9th, 2012   -  “We should be more citizen-focused about the roles that we can play individually and collectively in promoting safe practices instead of being wholly dependent on the Fire and Rescue Service when faced with imminent danger,” was the clear message sent by the Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool during a ceremony to commemorate the opening of Fire Safety Awareness Week.

“The main objective, I am sure you will agree is to see increased community involvement whether it is through our churches, schools, workplaces and other establishments that we may frequent for social gathering,” Minister Vanterpool elaborated.

“This year’s theme, “Let’s do our part, don’t give fire a place to start” speaks volumes. Whether it is through the adoption of fire prevention techniques that promote safety or the need for cultural shifts in our mindsets as they relate to common practice in our everyday lives, we must all do our part,” Minister Vanterpool re-iterated.

According to the Minister doing our part means being proactive rather than reactive, by equipping homes and businesses with smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers as well as having fire escape plans in place.

Minister Vanterpool applauded the work of the department. “I use this platform to publicly acknowledge the newly appointed Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Zebalon McLean for his new role as well as the supporting cast of valiant Fire and Rescue Service Officers that continue to put service above self. I simply want to say thank you for the hard work that you all do to keep our Territory safe from all fire hazards.”

In closing the Minister sent a message of encouragement to all residents to participate in the exciting activities that will be hosted this week.

“These activities are designed to instil and promote good fire safety practices through greater awareness of potential fire hazards,”

“Let’s do our part, don’t give fire a place to start is the theme for this year’s activities which is being observed in the Territory from October 7 to 14.

This year, the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service is celebrating 26 years of educating the community on the importance of reducing vulnerability to fire hazards.

The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to protecting life and property from the ravages of fire and other natural and manmade hazards.
