ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, October 16th 2012 - Another Rotary first has happened in the BVI in the form of a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. Ms Tashima Barzey is the proud recipient of this one year scholarship which has taken her to Edison State College in Fort Myers Florida where she is studying to become a Paramedic.  This is Tashima’s first step in fulfilling her dreams of becoming an Emergency Medical Services Instructor.  As an Ambassadorial Scholar Miss Barzey is a guest of Rotary District 6960 and her Host Club is The Rotary Club of Fort Myers South.

The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship focuses on intellectual pursuits combined with service, and promotes international understanding and friendly relations among people of different cultures. As such Miss Barzey will serve as a Goodwill Ambassador and will work on Rotary Projects of her host Club and will also give presentations about her culture to various Rotary Clubs, while at the same time experiencing a different culture and a different way of life.  According to Tashima, “It has always been a dream of mine to work and live in another country so I can learn how different communities live.”

Tashima subscribes to the Rotary Motto of Service Above Self as can be seen through her multi dimensional areas of community service. She volunteers with the Conservation and Fisheries Department for its turtle monitoring and tagging programme; is a PADI certified diver and enjoys cleaning and preserving the environment, is a member of CYEN; a volunteer with KATS and the BVI Red Cross and also finds time to be a Praise and Worship Leader at her Church.

Prior to commencing her studies Tashima along with thirteen other Ambassadorial Scholars from England, Ireland, Denmark, Australia, Jordan Ghana India, Mexico, Jamaica and USA participated in a three day seminar  in Florida to understand and gain appreciation for what it  really means to be a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.

Tashima is very grateful to the Rotarians who were instrumental in helping her secure this scholarship and or provided guidance along the way.  These include DG Vance Lewis, AG Ron Potter, Past Presidents Leroy Moses and  Al Quamin Nibbs (Rotaract),   Rtns Cate Stephenson and Charles Crane; as well as Host Rotarian Roger Mercado and Allison Hussey of District 6960.   She is also grateful to the BVI Tourist Board, Pusser’s West Indies Ltd and Kenny Tees for their kind donations of BVI souvenirs to be used in her ambassadorial role.

As for District Governor Vance Lewis he is proud and pleased that he was able to successfully negotiate an Ambassadorial Scholarship for the British Virgin Islands and wishes all of the scholars and in particular those from District 7020 (Jamaica and the BVI) every success.
