Charlestown, Nevis, October 17th, 2012 -- Nevis-based directors of the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr Telbert Glasgow and Mrs Sonita Daniel, have thanked the Nevisian Association of Washington DC (NEV-DC), and Nevisians in the Diaspora in general, for appreciating and recognising the development that is taking place on Nevis.
The two directors made the remarks recently, when they received from the acting manager of the Nevis branch, Ms Hyacinth Pemberton, an award of Excellence in Financial Services that had earlier been presented to the Development Bank by the Washington DC-based Nevisian association.
The Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis was one of five financial institutions presented with an award for Excellence in Financial Services by the Nevisian Association of Washington DC (NEV-DC) at its 8th Annual Awards Banquet on September 22, held at the Bethesda Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
The award reads: “The Nevisian Association of Washington, DC (NEV-DC) honours the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis for over 30 years of supporting and nurturing the education and entrepreneurial zeal of the Nevisian populace. Your meritorious service has helped raise the Nation and her people. We Salute You.”
Receiving the award on behalf of the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis was Mrs Alexa Pemberton, manager of the Bank’s Nevis branch. The colourful event that had Nevisian businessman, Mr Rawlinson Isaac, as the guest speaker was graced by the presence of the St. Kitts-Nevis Ambassador to the USA, Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin.
“Over the past 30 years, the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis has done considerable amount of work in extending loan facilities to the people of Nevis for mortgages, for student loans, agricultural loans, industrial loans and commercial loans,” commented Dr Glasgow.
“In addition to doing that, the bank has also given much technical assistance to small businesses in helping them to organise their finances and stay financially sound. The award was very fitting for the bank because the bank has lent a helping hand to a lot of people who would not have been able to get these facilities from commercial banks.”
According to Director Sonita Daniel, the presentation of the award to the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis by the Nevisian Association of Washington DC has been quite timely and appropriate.
“The Development Bank in my estimation has been a pioneer in the provision of educational loans over many, many years,” noted Mrs Daniel. “I myself have been a recipient of a student loan and student loans have been able to empower our people so that they are being able to equip themselves academically and to be able to move up the social and economic ladder.”
She observed that many economically disadvantaged persons have been able to empower themselves and their families after the Development Bank would have assisted them, and that they are now making their contribution not only in St. Kitts and Nevis, but in all the corners of the world.
“We want to say that this is timely,” said Mrs Daniel. “We are very appreciative of the recognition of the great and valuable contribution of the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, and more so to the island of Nevis, and we want to express our thanks and appreciation to the Nevisian Association based in Washington DC.”
The Development Bank was established in 1981 and the Nevis branch which has been in existence for the entire period, has provided valuable financial support for the Nevisian public in all areas. Branch operations are currently supervised by Mrs Alexa Pemberton with a dedicated staff of six full-time and two part-time employees.
“From 1981 to November 2010 the branch office was located in the Cotton House across from the DR Walwyn Plaza,” explained Branch Manager, Mrs Pemberton. “In December 2010, the offices were relocated to the Ward Building on the Island Main Road in Stoney Grove.”
According to the President of the Nevisian Association of Washington DC, Ms Jasmine Daniel, the association was founded in 2003 to help bridge the gap of Nevisians at home and in the Diaspora.
With a membership spanning Washington DC and New York metropolitan areas, the association strives to promote economic, educational, technological, social and cultural advancement of Nevisians and the descendants at home and abroad.
