Immaculate Conception Catholic School Holds Student Council Elections

Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, October 19th, 2012   --  October 12, 2012 the Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS) held their Student Council Elections for the 2012-2013 school year.

ICCS has reorganized their Student Council to include two Student Councils; one at both the primary and secondary levels. These groups will be advised by two members of the school staff.  The advisor for the Primary Level is Mrs. Emelie St Luce Fahie. The Secondary Level is led by Ms. Cyrene Simmonds.

This year the Student Councils have both adopted new Constitutions that will govern their operations.  The Constitution dictates the purpose for the Student Council, Executive roles and duties, how meetings are to be conducted (using Roberts Rules of Order), and the voting/election process.

The first order of business for the two new advisors was to inform the entire student body of their ability to run for and be a part of the Student Council of ICCS.  Starting the week of September 10th presentations were made in all classes of the school to educate the children about the Student Council and how they could be an active part of the organization.

All students in grades 1 – 11 will be represented by a Class Representative who will attend meetings and bring ideas and suggestions from their classmates to the Executive. Students in grades 4 – 6 and grades 9 & 10 were also able to run for the Executive Committee of their respective counsel.  The positions to be filled are; President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer.

On Monday, September 24th students who were interested in running for class representative or the executive were called to a meeting.  At that point students were told that they would need to submit permission letters from their parents and an approval letter from their teachers.  Students were to draft speeches and start to create their campaign posters all of which required approval by the advisors.

Then the week  of  October 8th – 12th students set out to campaign.  Speeches were read over the public address system for all to hear.  Posters were hung around the campus, and the candidates made visits to homerooms to share the qualifications they will bring to the offices they are running for.  Also during the week homeroom teachers along with the Student Council Advisors, completed Voter Registration Cards for all of the students in grades 1 – 11.

October 12, 2012 marked the Election Day.  Parent volunteers were sought through the help of the ICCS, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to help at the polling stations.  The voting process was set up to emulate real polling stations so that students would also learn and experience first hand the voting process used in the Federation.

Students entered their assigned polling station where they presented their ICCS Voter ID card.  Their name was checked on the list, and they were given a ballot that they took behind a voting screen to cast their vote. They then folded their ballots and dropped them in the ballot box.  Their fingers were then ‘inked’ to indicate that their vote had been cast.

Once the elections are finalized and the new officers take their positions on the Student Council they will meet on a regular basis to discuss matters that effect the student body of ICCS.  They will discuss ways to continue to improve the school community through their goals and objectives that they set for the year.  The Executive Councils will also meet on a regular basis with the ICCS Principal, Mr. Sidney Osborne.

Results were announced the same day as elections.
