Students at CFBC take to the polls today

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – STUDENTS of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College took to the polls today (Oct. 24) to vote for their student body elect.

Will it be Team SAP- the Student Action Party made up of Sandy Pointers Delonte Lewis (President) and Jackiema Flemming (Vice President) or Team AHOY-Always Helping Our Youth with Newton Ground’s Vassany Gumbs (President) and his Vice President Kenesia Jack of Newtown.

The mediator who is a faculty member and lecturer at the College for many years, Hugh Heyliger, oversees the elections and guides the students. He said that everything has been going well.

“The polls opened at eight, which is in keeping with the constitution, and the process is also well managed by members of the faculty and we have some alumni coming in to assist with the process today,” he said.

He said the voting will end at 8:00 p.m. this evening and that the counting of the votes will begin immediately after. Then as soon as the process is over the results will be made public.

“The results must be made available no later than 12 noon the next day and each side will have two persons observing the count. So apart from a few problems - with student identification, with their names not being on the list even though they had the proper identification - everything has been going well; the candidates have not complained,” Heyliger said.

Jack of AHOY, who said she is very anxious to learn of the results, admitted to being very tired right now as she has been up since 4:00 a.m.

“I feel anxious, I feel energized, I can’t sit, I can’t eat, and I can’t relax right now! I’m just too anxious for the results, but whatever happens, God willing, we will be happy for the outcome… win or lose,” she said.

Jack said everything seems positive so far, and feels they have a strong chance of winning.

She was also pleased with the turnout of students.

“The elections have been going good; the students have been coming out in their large numbers and it’s good to see them getting involved. The elections also seem fair so far as there are officers from both parties looking on,” she said.

SAP’s Lewis also said he was very tired and exhausted at the moment but is keeping positive.

“So far it has been going real good. I feel a lot of support from the different Divisions and my friends and supporters have come to rally with me and keep me up with their words so it has been going good so far. The support is tremendous,” he said.
