Douglas supports Obama, calls Romney a flip-flopper

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WEIGHING in on the presidential election campaign for the United States of America, Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has described Republican Mitt Romney as a “flip flopper” and has indicated his support for Democratic President Barack Obama who is seeking re-election.

“I support Obama, I want him to win. I believe that he is the better candidate for us. I think he holds more promise for the people of America, and I have no apology to say the black people of American. I believe that their interests would be better looked after in that case,” PM Douglas expressed on Tuesday (Oct. 23) during his radio programme ‘Ask the Prime Minister’.

He articulated his view that Obama – as opposed to Romney – is the person who is better able to take the USA forward and to navigate through these difficult economic waters.

“But I think he is best for all of America. White, black, Latinos, whatever they come from, I think that he has a wider view of the world. I think Romney really is very, very surprisingly really uninformed with some of the things that he has been saying. And I have found him to be a flip flopper. He changes his mind a lot, listening to what he was saying from the time the whole campaign started to what he is saying now. And he is one of those who I will say is a man of political expediency; very, very expedient.

“He changes his mind accordingly…You have to be firm as a leader (and) that is what I like about Obama. He is firm, he knows that the four years that he has been there have not been necessarily very, very good years. He has been challenged, very traumatised but he has kept the faith and he brings hope, hope that as we transition out of the period that he is experiencing…”

The presidential debate is one of the most looked-forward-to parts of the presidential elections. The three debates were held on October 3, 16 and 22 with Romney winning the first and Obama the last two.

Dr. Douglas said that he was unable to view the final of the three but indicated that from the feedback he received, “I think Obama has done very well.”

Before sharing a chuckle, Dr. Douglas expressed, “I like Obama, I believe he is Labour.”

November 6, 2012 is earmarked as Election Day for the USA.
