Preschoolers celebrate ‘Who Am I Day’

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CONSIDERED the most anticipated activity for the first term of the school year, children of the Victoria Road Pre-School arrived at the learning institution Friday (Oct. 26) adorned in colourful and creative garb in commemoration of their 'Who Am I Day'.

Leaving their uniforms at home, the eager youngsters – with the help of their parents/guardians –were dressed in an array of costumes that included cartoon characters, notable careers and sporting activities.

The school’s compound was abuzz with extra-ordinary activity and the atmosphere infused with an injection of vibrant colours as the youngsters donned the costumes of carpenters, superman, superwoman, a captain, a pilot, nurses, doctors, princesses, fairies, a bumble bee and even basketball stars.

The morning’s activities mirrored those of a regular day at the Victoria Pre-School but, according to Supervisor at the institution Carencia Warner, the afternoon featured a mini-modelling show where each student showed off their costume while the others indicated what type of costumes they were.

While the exercise was geared predominantly towards the children, it seemed as if the teachers could not have resisted getting in on the action. And what a joy it had been for the children to see their teachers displaying as much creativity as they had.

From Little Bopeep who lost her sheep to a cook, a doctor, a high school student and even a boutique model; the teachers spared no effort in displaying their ingenuity.

Warner – in an interview with SKNVibes – explained that the tradition is that on the last Friday of every month the students are allowed to wear jeans and T-shirts to school. However, former Supervisor of the Victoria Road Pre-School Andrea Liddie hatched the idea of Who Am I Day some years ago and it was decided that on the last Friday in every October the children were free to express themselves through their attire.

Warner expressed that this is an excellent exercise to document a child’s interests as he or she develops. She said – for example – that last year, one child was dressed as Scooby Doo because that was the cartoon character that he loved. But this year, as his interests have widened, he came dressed as a basketballer.

Next year’s activity is to fall on October 25 and, with this year’s already concluded, anticipation has already begun to grow.
