BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN of all sizes and ages took to the streets on Saturday (OCT. 27) to walk, and for some even to run, all in an effort to bring Breast Cancer awareness and the search for the cure to the fore.

The walk, under the direction of Essence of Hope and dubbed 'walk for the cause, race for life’ began at 5:30 a.m. sharp at the Caribbean Cinema car park where all in attendance warmed up for the long journey ahead.

Over 200 persons donned their pink shirts of all varieties and walked from the Cinema on to the FT Williams Highway to the Kim Collins Highway, on to the Frigate Bay road and ended at the large pasture at Frigate Bay.

After the walk, those in attendance were served a healthy breakfast after which winners were announced for various categories.

The Digicel-sponsored event saw prizes being given to the first male and female to make it to the finish line; the person with the best designed shirt; the largest family turnout as well as the largest registered group.

Pam Hendrickson, founder of Essence of Hope described the walk as a successful one, noting that she saw a lot more persons walking this year compared to the turnout last year, which she said was also successful.

This walk marked the end of a number of activities held by Essence of Hope as a means of creating Breast Cancer awareness.

On October 24, the Organisation in collaboration with the Teacher’s Union held a Health Forum at the Basseterre High School on Breast Cancer.

Yesterday (Oct. 26), the Teachers Union launched a special project in memory of a teacher who passed away. It was held at the Cayon High School as the teacher had formerly taught there.

Hendrickson said she intends to have another walk next year October (2013) and hopes to see more persons coming out to walk for the cure.

Essence of Hope was founded in August 2009 with the mission of educating persons about Breast Cancer and providing free mammograms as well as financial assistance to those diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
