Visits to older persons continues

    Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 29th, 2012 (SKNIS): Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas, along with staff of the Social Services Department of the Ministry of Community and Social Development, recently paid visits to older persons from Constituencies 5 and 6.

     

    Denise Byron-Morris Supervisor for Social Assistance, along with Social Assistance Officer Larissa Riley, Community Development Officer Dorothy Markman Caines and the Prime Minister made their way to the homes of 10 older persons to present tokens of appreciation for their contribution to the development of our nation. 

     

    Local centenarian of, Wilfred Martin was one of the many being honoured. The Prime Minister expressed his pleasure to celebrate older persons month with him.

     

    “This is really a special occasion. It is not only the occasion when we are celebrating the month of older persons, but it is a time when we are also celebrating our present day centenarian in the beautiful green village of St. Pauls...He has been a man that has worked hard from his earliest life right here in the village of St. Pauls; a farmer from beginning to end.”

     

    While reminiscing on their early years, each resident expressed their sincere gratitude to the Prime Minister and others for honouring them. 

     

    “Thanks for your hospitality, it is very great. And most of all I thank the Lord for helping me to live to see this age,” said Agatha Brookes of Constituency number 6.

     

    Joseph Buchanon stated that from its inception he has been working for the labour party and commended them for “[doing] their very best.”

     

    The other honourees included Evangeline Maynard, George Gumbs, Vinecia Thomas, Sylvia E. James and Agatha Maxima, Cloutilda Thomas and Edward Bailey. 

     

    The visits are part of the activities of the Month of Older Persons which is being held under the theme; “Longevity: Getting and Staying Active in Later Years.”

     

    They will continue with the Deputy Prime Minister, Honerable Sam Condor.
