Homeowner beats thief with broadside of machete

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE audacity of some thieves is sometimes above comprehension, but the equally audacious actions taken by a homeowner who caught a thief in his home yesterday morning (Oct. 29) sent the bandit fleeing with fear for his life.

The homeowner – who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity – said for some time now he has had strange experiences where he would leave money in a specific area for his son, who would later indicate that he met no money in that area.

He said the most recent incidents – barring yesterday’s – took place on Wednesday and Friday, last. Having realised that he was being taken for a ride and needing to deal effectively with the situation, the man said he left money for his son in the usual spot, hid himself in the house and patiently waited to see who would remove it.

The explanation he gave was that when he would have left his home – if his son was still on the inside – he would close the door but not lock it. And so the seasoned thief gained easy access to the home.

“So we purposefully planned to catch whoever it is. And this morning (yesterday) about 8:10, I heard my door open and the person came through the living room and to the dining room where I left a marked $10 bill. The person came in, took the money and was heading to our son’s bedroom when I exited my bedroom and confronted him.”

The victim said the genesis of the confrontation was verbal and it quickly shifted to physical.

“First I asked him what he was doing with my money and I asked him what he was doing in my house. He threw down the money on the floor and I began giving him some blows with the broad wide of a machete.”

The unmasked young man ran through the house and exited through the door he used to enter the home before scaling the perimeter fence and making good his escape.

The incident – the victim explained – was reported to the district police station and the intruder – who is said to be in his late teen or early 20s - was apprehended by the police.
