BASSETERRE St. Kitts November 2nd, 2012 - Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) donated two pulse oximeters to the Joseph N France (JNF) General Hospital this month, for use in the medical ward and in the emergency medical services divisions. A pulse oximeter is a device intended for the measurement of oxygen saturation levels.
The device can assist in the detection of hypoxia (when the body has an inadequate supply of oxygen) and provides details to doctors and nurses so they can determine the needed course of action in a medical situation. RUSVM’s goal of the donation was to assist JNF in providing an additional level of monitoring for its patients.
“The JNF hospital serves the entire community and RUSVM is committed to assisting the dedicated doctors and nurses in performing their duties while making use of the medical technology available,” said Ms. Jodi Peeler, RUSVM assistant dean of communications. “As a veterinary school that prides itself on providing our students with the skills to become successful animal doctors, RUSVM understands the importance of having the right tools for the job and is proud to be able to lend support to the JNF Hospital in this regard.”
The donation was suggested to the RUSVM administration team from an employee of the University. A member of her family recently received medical care at the hospital and it came to her attention that more should be done to assist the hospital in acquiring essential equipment. As an employee she was familiar with the mission of RUSVM and felt this would be an appropriate donation to support the St. Kitts and Nevis communities.
Ms. Launette Adams, Operations Manager received the donation on behalf of the hospital. “Pulse oximeters are essential, yet delicate pieces of equipment at any hospital. They can report an accurate reading within seconds. Speed is important especially in an emergency situation,” she explained. “The administration at JNF is grateful for this donation and hopes that more organizations will see the important role that the hospital plays in the St. Kitts and Nevis community and step forward to assist just as Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine has today.”
RUSVM is committed to improving the well being of the St. Kitts and Nevis community and has made previous contributions to the J.N. F. General Hospital, as well as other community initiatives.
