BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Kenneth Errol Caldwell appeared before His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas at the Basseterre High Court last Thursday (Nov. 1) for sentencing and was given eight years in the ‘pen’ .

Cordwell, at the opening of the September 2012 Criminal Assizes, pleaded guilty to wounding Thiron Mulraine with intent to do grievous bodily harm on April 8, 2012 in Basseterre.

Before learning of his fate, Caldwell, on the brink of tears, begged the court for leniency, stating that he was remorseful and regretted his wrong doing.

"I am not one to get into trouble. I do not socialise...it is from work to home for me," he said.

He further asked the court for a second chance, noting "all I have is my job that I love dearly".

Justice Thomas asked Caldwell if he knew the person he injured was a police officer, to which he replied, "At the time I did not know he was a police."

Justice Thomas said: "The fact of the matter is that you injured a police officer."

He told Caldwell that the court must always take great concern with anyone who injures police officers and noted that "police officers are here to protect society".

Caldwell's Social Inquiry Report stated that a number of individuals described him as a person who always had anger issues.

He was sentenced to 12 years, which was reduced by one third because of his guilty plea. He would instead be serving eight years.
