Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts – E pluribus unum: “Out of many, one” and that one is Ms. Daria James of the George Moody Stuart Primary School. Ten-year old Ms. James beat out her 16 other competitors and emerged as the 2012 Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) Spelling Bee Champion.

The Annual Spelling Bee was held at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium-ECCB on October 25th, 2012. Students, teachers, parents and well-wishers packed the auditorium, wearing their respective schools’ colours and cheered on their favourite competitors. The word battle was intense but when the smoke cleared the top three participants for the competition, who all received trophies and gifts from Seven Seas, LIME and Western Union, were as follows:

1st place – Ms. Daria James, George Moody Stuart Primary (Awarded EC $1000)

2nd place – Mr. Mickronn Stevens, Beach Allen Primary (Awarded EC $800)

3rd place – Ms. Imani Comrie, Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary (Awarded EC $500)

“Our Club was ecstatic to see 17 of the 24 primary schools in St. Kitts participating in this year’s competition,” said RCL President Mr. Lester Hanley. “This is indicative of the commitment by our nation’s teachers and parents to encourage children to read more and as such learn new words along the way.”

Minister of Education, The Honourable Nigel Carty, congratulated the participants following the competition and encouraged them to continue to stay focused and work hard in school. Minister Carty also applauded RCL for its continued excellence in promoting youth empowerment and development programmes such as the Spelling Bee Competition.

“A competition of this nature is a critical component of our youth’s educational advancement and the Rotary Club of Liamuiga must be commended for being a leader is this area,” said Minister Carty.

RCL extends heartfelt thanks to the gracious sponsors of the 2012 Spelling Bee Competition: Seven Seas through their local distributor Ram's Trading Limited, Western Union of Jamaica, LIME, Sun Top drinks (Ram’s Trading Ltd.) and ZIZ Radio and TV.
