Sandy Point Groups to host land-for-debt swap meeting tonight

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE three leading community groups in Sandy Point - SPIRIT, SPACS and CIPEO - would be hosting an open air discussion this evening (Nov. 6), where residents of that town and its immediate surroundings can air their views on topical land-for-debt swap.

Che-Raina Warner – Public Relations Officer for SPIRIT (Sandy Pointers Inspiring Real Improvement Throughout) – explained to this media house that the aim of the meeting is to record the various concerns of the people and share them with Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and his entourage when they would have arrived for their scheduled meeting for the Sandy Point area.

She said the main agenda for the meeting is the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank (Vesting of Certain Lands) Bill 2012 and invitations were extended to specific individuals to speak on this issue at the meeting.

Warner informed that Dwyer Astaphan, Carlton DuPont, the Hon. Shawn Richards and the Hon. Timothy Harris were invited to make presentations, but most of them have indicated that, for various reasons, they would be unable to attend.

Richards – the Parliamentary Representative for Sandy Point – has however indicated that he would be in attendance.

The consortium had expressed its disapproval of the land-for-debt swap initiative, particularly because there was little to no consultation prior to the passage of the Bill in Parliament.

It continues to reiterate that with such a major decision, the public should have been engaged in in-depth discussion and debate before it was made.

The open air meeting would be held on Mount Idle and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
