BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TELECOMMUNICATION FIRM, Digicel, hosted a charity fundraiser last night (8. Nov) with the premier showing of SkyFall 007 in which starred the famous James Bond character at the Caribbean Cinemas, located at Buckley’s Site.

The sold out premier saw over 80 persons attending the event, including a number of representatives from the business community.

Tickets were sold at EC$100 per person.

The event was organised to raise charity awareness for three institutions - the St. Christopher Children’s Home, AVEC (Advanced Vocational Education Centre) and the Special Education Unit.

As understood, Digicel has been involved in charitable contributions to these companies since the beginning of its operation in 2006.

A cocktail reception was held prior to the viewing of the movie.

Among those in attendance included the owner of Beaumont Park, Arthur Sharp and his wife Daislyn; Director of TDC Group of Companies Michael Morton; Special Advisor in the Ministry of International Transport, Cedric Liburd, who was accompanied by his daughter; Manager of  the St. Kitts Visitor Channel, Sharon Stevens-James; and former Chief Operator of Christophe Harbour, Legrand Elebash.

Digicel’s Country Manager Sean Latty spoke with the media after the showing of the movie.

“The real reason for doing this was for charity. We’re coming to the end of the year; it’s Christmas…festive season. It’s time for giving back. We decided that one good way to do it was to do a movie premier and also try to raise some awareness,” he stated.

Latty continued: “Doing a movie premier and inviting corporate sponsors to take part would help to raise the awareness for some of the things we sponsor in terms of charities - the Children’s Home, AVEC and also the Special Ed school. So that was the main focus; developing something we can actually build on over the coming years to give back to these charities.”

He rated the event to be a successful one.

Latty also spoke about the good feedback he got from some business persons, who praised Digicel for the brilliant initiative.

“They said the idea was great and they would actually try to do something like this. So we’re hoping they’ll have the same success,” he commented.

The event’s dress code was elegantly casual and Latty wowed the attendees with his attire of black and white long sleeve shirt, black pants with matching waistcoat and a red bowtie, red being the affiliated colour of Digicel.

Elebash also stuck out in his grey tuxedo and black bowtie.

After the movie, a raffle was drawn using the event’s ticket stumps. One patron, Dexter Ward, won a Samsung Galaxy s3.

During a brief interview with Ward, he said the event was “well put together. I had a great time. The movie was great”.

However, there was no crowd response when the first ticket number (0139) was called.

Ward was indeed a lucky winner, in the sense that he was leaving the Cinema when encouraged by his friends to go back inside, and “that’s when I won”. His win “surprised” him.

During the raffle segment, Digicel’s Marketing Executive Jeanille Obsorne thanked those who supported the event and remarked, “Be happy to know that you were the first in St. Kitts and Nevis to see SkyFall…compliments Digicel.”
