BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE man who was operating the garbage collection truck that recently overturned, crushing a man in the process, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Inspector Cromwell Henry informed this publication yesterday (Nov. 14) that Oliver Maynard of Molyneaux was formally arrested and charged with the offence.

The charge stems from a Tuesday (Nov. 13) incident which involved a truck owned by the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) – P7661. It occurred along Bourryeaux Range at about 11:50 a.m. and resulted in the death of Prickly Pear Alley resident Terrence ‘Tupac’ Johnson.

He also informed that Maynard made an appearance before the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail in the sum of $15 000 with sureties and attached conditions.

And he is scheduled to make an appearance at the Sandy Point Magistrate’s Court shortly.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s autopsy was performed yesterday by Dr. Dora Magdariaga, resident pathologist at the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

According to a police communique issued by the Traffic Department, the pathologist concluded that death was caused by traumatic shock which resulted from the traffic accident.

Johnson’s is the Federation’s fourth road fatality for the year.

“The Traffic Department continues to remind motorists of their responsibility to always exercise care and caution when using the roads and drivers of lorries and other open-back vehicles, that passengers ought not to be carried in the cargo tray of these vehicles unless approved seating is installed,” the press release concluded.
