BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – VISITORS to this website who look forward to seeing reports of events of the St. Kitts-Nevis National Carnival will not have that privilege this year.
According to information received directly from the Carnival Committee, media houses – including SKNVibes – are forbidden from providing coverage for Carnival events unless specific criteria are met.
On Wednesday (Nov. 21), a member of one of the departments of this media house made contact with recently-appointed Chairman of the Carnival Committee Sylvester Anthony to enquire about the possibility of settling a business matter.
The individual advised they were told that:
1. Anthony indicated he fails to understand why this publication was given banner ads to place on the website when Carnival has a website of its own;
2. Anthony indicated his hope that no one from Carnival sends any ads to this publication regarding Sugar Mas’ 2012/2013; and
3. No media house is allowed to cover Carnival events without sending a proposal to the Committee or without having received expressed permission to provide coverage for the events.
For several years SKNVibes has provided extensive coverage for the St. Kitts-Nevis Carnival festivities, which includes composing feature articles, news articles and providing a wide-range of photo galleries which were perused by hundreds of thousands.
Whether these are read or viewed because one may not have received the opportunity to patronise a particular event, or because there are portions of an event that one may have missed or if it is simply because there is a joy associated with mentally ingesting the content of these, the coverage has undoubtedly become a staple for both locals and those who reside further afield.
This publication is not aware of the underlying reason for the Carnival Committee’s stance for the 2012/2013 festivities (if any). However, it was felt that – as we have provided this service over the years, and as you our readership has grown accustomed to the various highlighted we would have provided – we are duty-bound to inform of these recent happenings.
