UK University Launches Scholarship Initiative to Meet Caribbean Tourism Sector Needs

By: EFA, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 27th, 2012  -- As the global economy continues its recovery, it is widely expected that this will continue to have a positive impact on global tourism.  This should be good news for the Caribbean.  However, given the increased global competition for tourism dollars, and the growing popularity of destinations including Cuba then nothing can be taken for granted.

To ensure that Caribbean countries can continue to compete and thrive in this increasingly competitive sector, priority must be given to the skills development of its workforce.  While opportunities exist for training in this sector, many persons are unable to develop their skills due to busy family and work lives.  To address this need, a leading UK university is now launching a new flexible, distance learning course to provide wider access to knowledge and training in this field.

Anglia Ruskin University, a leading university based in the East of England is launching a new BA in International Hospitality and Tourism Management by distance learning through its Caribbean partner, Education for Advancement (EFA).  The new course will be available to persons throughout Jamaica and the wider Caribbean seeking to launch or progress their career in the hospitality and tourism industry.

To celebrate the launch, the University through EFA is offering a number of part-scholarships for its launch cohort in January 2013 with a value of up to $6,500 (US) per scholarship.   John Evans, President of EFA commented “we continue to introduce flexible, affordable courses to meet the evolving training need of the Caribbean.  Hospitality and Tourism are key economic drivers for the region, and we need to ensure that persons employed in the sector are educated to the highest standard.  We hope the scholarships will create opportunities for persons to advance their careers and lead by example”.

Education for Advancement (EFA) is one of the leading providers of distance and online learning in the Caribbean today.  Headquartered in Florida, it has a network of regional offices throughout the region supporting over 2,500 active students.  EFA’s focus is to help develop its students into competent online learners by delivering a wide range of support services, in addition to the academic support students receive from the university.

EFA partners with some of the top providers of accredited distance and online learning from the UK and USA including University of Leicester (UK), Anglia Ruskin University (UK), Victory University (USA) and Ashworth College (USA).
