Minister of Sport urges support for Special Olympics

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 26th, 2012 (SKNIS) - Minister responsible for Sport and Youth Empowerment, Honourable Glenn Phillip has appealed to the public to openly give support to the Special Olympics movement in St. Kitts and Nevis.

During a televised address to mark the start of a number of activities running from November 24 to 30, Minister Phillip highlighted the impact that Special Olympics has on the population.

“I am truly pleased to witness the continuous and effective efforts made by Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis to improve and sustain the holistic development of the Special Olympic athletes and their quality of life,” he stated. “This certainly helps to build their personal level of confidence and strengthen their relationship [with] parents, the work places and the community in general.”

Noting the theme for this year’s programme “Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis on the Move” the minister commended the efforts of the Board of Directors, the principal and staff of the Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School, the Special Education Unit in Nevis, parents, business houses and the many volunteers.

“I wish to encourage the general public to provide support during the week of activities and the programmes that are designated for your enlightenment, such as the street parade scheduled for Friday, November 30,” he urged, adding that his ministry in addition to the Ministry of Education and other government ministries will continue to provide essential support for this developmental programme, on behalf of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.

On Sunday (November 25), members of the movement worshipped at the Christian Life Assembly along with the congregation. Additional activities scheduled include the Launch of a Special Olympics newsletter, parent support group, and a Dollar Day where persons will be asked to donate $1.00 each.

Additional information on Special Olympics week of activities is available via telephone 662.2459.
