Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 26th, 2012 (SKNIS): The Ministry of Education recently joined forces with the Learning Support Departments of all the high schools in St. Kitts and Nevis to impart to students skills on interacting politely in social situations.
Eleanor Philips Learning Support Coordinator, stated that the workshop will help the children to understand the different social graces that are expected of them.
“They are here to learn about etiquette in public places, that is how they should behave when they are in public places and also what they should do when they enter a dining room in a formal setting, noted Mrs. Phillip. “So they are here today practicing more or less what they have done in the dining etiquette session.”
She also stressed that the workshop is important because many of the Federation’s youth are falling into unacceptable groups.
“Over the years we have recognised that a lot of the young men and even some young women end up in groups that are really not acceptable in the community and we call these groups gangs. When we check we found that most of them come from families that really didn't teach them the social graces that they should know, that is, how to behave in various places.
Mrs. Phillip expressed that if children are taught how to behave in public places, how to make good friendships and how to make good choices the number of students that are ending up in unacceptable groups will decrease.”
The ministry has worked along with teachers and members from the community to facilitate the sessions.
Topics covered included etiquette in public places, dining etiquette, inter and intra personal relationships, that is, teaching them how to behave when they are around others and how to choose their friends.
