Florida man dies from choking on cockroach parts

Edward Archbold

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HOW many of us would enter a cockroach-eating competition? Just the mere thought of one of these germ-infested insects entering one’s buccal cavity is enough to induce regurgitation.

Not only did a Florida man enter such a competition, but he emerged the winner. However, tragedy struck shortly after the competition when the young man began feeling ill and was subsequently transported to the North Broward Medical Cente where he died.

The competition was held in Florida in early October, 2012 where some 30 individuals participated with the hope of capturing the prize, a python.

According to a BBC report filed yesterday (Nov. 26), Edward Archbold (32) “died of ‘asphyxia due to choking and aspiration of gastric contents”.

It also explained that Archbold’s “airway became obstructed with ‘arthropod body parts’.”

An article previously published by that media house explains that following the competition, Archbold collapsed at
Deerfield Beach, Florida, in the pet shop within which the competition was held.

Archbold is said to have ploughed through dozens of cockroaches and worms during the competition and, according to the owner of the shop, Ben Siegel, he didn’t appear to be ill.

“…‘We feel terribly awful…He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice…’.”

BBC reports that Siegel’s lawyer has informed that the participants were made to affix their signatures to disclaimers “accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest".

While Archbold suffered through this ordeal, the BBC reports that no other competitor fell ill as a result of their involvement in the competition.
