Speaker of the House falls ill; sitting postponed

Speaker of the House - Hon. Curtis Martin

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE possibility of robust debate in the House of Parliament yesterday (Dec. 7) did not materialise as the day’s sitting had to be postponed because the Speaker of the House had reportedly fallen ill.

The session which was to have taken place would have been a continuation of that held late last month. And among the Bills listed for debate was the Senators (Increase of Number) Bill, 2012.

According to information reaching this publication, the session was to have begun at 10:00 a.m. and would have been carried live on ZIZ radio and a live video feed streamed via www.cuopm.com.

The nation watched as most – if not all – of the Parliamentarians gathered within the House and then shortly before noon began exiting the Assembly. Just about that time, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Erasmus Williams made an announcement on ZIZ radio about the Speaker’s (Hon. Curtis Martin) illness.

“I would just like to inform listeners to ZIZ and the general public in St. Kitts and Nevis that the resumption of the sitting of National Assembly has been put off as a result of the illness of the Speaker of the House, Honourable Curtis Martin.”

Williams also indicated that Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas, Leader of Government Business and Deputy Prime Minister Sam Condor and Leader of the Opposition Mark Brantley were all informed of this development.

He however did not provide a date by which the House is expected to resume.
