BRADES, Montserrat, December 17th, 2012 – A large contingent of the Sea Port and Air Port security personnel were sworn in on Sunday, December 16, 2012, as Special Constables under the provisions of the Police Act after each receiving an appointment for the same by His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis.

Acting Police Commissioner Bradley Siddell said the ceremony was the conclusion of the “first stage of some training seminars hosted by the Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) for the ports security officers. The training included session on the Constitution, lawful authorities, powers of arrest, use of force, code of conduct, handcuffing plus baton techniques.”

“The appointments are permanent and are not directly related to Festival 50. It is part of an ongoing strategy of the RMPS to combine policing and National Security resources between the RMPS and several other key stakeholders. These Special Constables have the same police powers as the officers of the RMPS but their duties will be confined the Ports,” Siddell explained.

“These appointments together with the training they have already received and future training to come  will help the officers to be better equipped when dealing  with the many potentially dangerous situations that they can be faced with while carrying out their duties,” said Chief Security Officer at the John A. Osborne Airports Daniele James.

The Special Constable Orientation Training took place in the HRMU training room at Government Headquarters on the 6th and 7th November 2012. There were twenty (22) participants from both the Airport and Seaport.

“We would like to thank Commissioner of Police (Ag) Mr Bradley Siddell for his assistance in organising and conducting the training sessions as well as taking the time out to facilitate the ceremony and for personally administering the oath,” added Mrs. James.
