A Unique Bookshop opens in Greenlands!

By: Lorna Callender, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ‘Greenlands Books and Things’ had a soft launch on Saturday morning (December 15, 2012) introducing a truly wonderful range of books and services.

It is expected that this bookshop will fill the void that now exists in finding easy access to quality reading material including New York Times best sellers, and it is also expected to expand the minds of discerning readers with its rich range of books on Self Development.

Here you can also find local and regional authors in the Caribbean section;  African thinkers in the African section… there is a Business Section which will be a boon to those in leadership and management and in the section on Self Development, one can find all kinds of advice on Relationships including advice from John Maxwell of ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ fame.  The famed Anthony Roberts also features, and Malcolm Gladwell’s bestsellers – ‘Outliers’, ‘Tipping Point’ and ‘Blink’ also reside on these shelves.

In the ‘Used Books’ section, one can find all manner of themes in books that already had a special place on bookshelves of former readers.

‘Greenlands Books and Things’ … Why “Things”?  Things refer to the unique services this bookstore also offers which are both intriguing and heartwarming.  Where else can you go and order our national dress made to fit your bulk or lack of it? That service is offered here.

Want to get letters, bills or cards posted and you wish to avoid the lines, or parking problems, you can get your postage stamps right there.

It was heartwarming to see the Art and Craft products of the children of Ade’s Place here, as this venue provides an outlet for such work. So you can double up by donating to charity and getting your Christmas cards (very special ones) and decorations at the same time.

Traditional and modern children’s books also feature.  From Dr. Seuss to modern short stories by Caribbean authors as well as games, pocket crosswords, crayons, scotch tape etc - all easily accessible here.

This venture is the brainchild of Dr. Robertine Chaderton, well-known educator and Director of North Eastern Caribbean Accounting School (NECAS) based right here in St. Kitts. The bookshop is also housed at the same building bordering Greenlands Park.

Dr. Chaderton admits that the opening of the bookshop fulfils a dream she had ever since she had her first summer job at a bookstore when she was 16 years of age. Later she dreamed of it as a retirement option.

However, her vision has become a reality even before she has retired and because it is providing services as well – services she found difficult to access at the present time - it can really be seen as a convenience store as well.

What could be more convenient than finding books that stimulate your mind and provide food for thought without having to order them?  What could be more convenient than being able to park easily in order to find a favourite read – or to get stamps – or to participate in lifelong learning?

Hours of opening are also very convenient – 9.30 am to 7.07 pm - Monday to Saturday. So get there by 7 and they will still squeeze you in!

At the unique launch which opened with a circle of prayer by friends and well wishers, all prayed for blessings, growth and protection on this unique vision brought to reality on Saturday morning.

‘Living successfully’, ‘How to stop worrying’, ‘How to win friends’, ‘Overcoming dysfunctions of a Team’. ‘How successful women think differently’, are some of the titles that grace the covers of these books - skills and knowledge that everyone needs.

And … if you “want to do something else but don’t know what it is”, there is a book by that name there also.  You owe it to yourself to give this unique bookstore a look!
