West Bourne Street man charged on importation of Cannabis

By: Customs PRO, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, 20th DECEMBER 2012 (Customs PRO) - Customs and Excise has charged an importer under Section 116 of the Customs (Control and Management) Act with the importation of a restricted good under the laws of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Mr. Jarez Underwood of West Bourne Street, Basseterre, was cautioned and read the charge after he was found to be in possession of a vegetable substance that was suspected to be cannabis. The item has since been verified as the same.

The cannabis was being imported in a package being cleared by Mr. Underwood at the Ralphford James Merchant Customs Courier Facility, Bird Rock, Basseterre on December 17, 2012.

Enforcement Officers of the Customs and Excise Department are continuing their investigations which to date reveal that the importer sought to conceal the restricted good in a package that was falsely declared.

Mr. Underwood will be brought before the District ‘A’ Magistrate to answer the charge. It is expected that other charges will follow.

Customs and Excise is determined to fulfil its mandate, chief of which is the protection of the borders of the Federation.
