Major employment initiative to be launched in federation

Press Release (NSTP-SIDF)

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 19th 2012 (NSTP-SIDF) – An initiative designed to create empowerment opportunities for Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis adversely affected by the global economic crisis is being implemented simultaneously in both Islands.  People Employment Program (PEP) spearheaded by the National Skills Training Programme (NSTP) and funded by the St. Kitts and Nevis Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF), will be launched on Friday, December 21, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Bank Street in St. Kitts and in the Memorial Square in Charlestown, Nevis.

    The main objectives of PEP are to reduce the rate of employment and empower Nationals to earn a living by providing skills training, opportunities for work experience, and funding for development of small enterprises.  PEP is comprised of six (6) projects which collectively target a wide range of the unemployed population. These projects are:

    • Engaging Qualified Interns Project (EQUIP) – Academically qualified but unemployed persons are placed on 6 months’ paid job attachment;
    • National Infrastructure Improvement Project (NIIP) – Job opportunities to enhance the environment are provided for unemployed persons;
    • Women in Construction Trades (WICT) – Paid classroom training and job attachments are provided for women interested in the construction industry;
    • Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (STED) – Paid skills and entrepreneurial training is offered to assist people in making their business ideas a reality;
    • Agro-enterprise Training and Management (ATM) – Paid training in agro-enterprise management is offered to interested persons;
    • Women in Small Enterprises (WISE) – Training and grant funding are offered to women entrepreneurs to operate more efficient and profitable businesses.

    The launch in St. Kitts and Nevis commences with a ceremony from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. featuring remarks by the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Prime Minister of the Federation, and the Honourable Joseph Parry, Premier of Nevis, respectively.  At each event, brochures with information about PEP and its various projects will be distributed, and application forms will be provided.  Prospective applicants may complete and return their application forms at the exposition or apply online by logging on to
    www.sknpep.com

    Unemployed Nationals in St. Kitts and Nevis are invited to attend the launch of PEP and to apply to participate in one of the projects.  By providing training, employment opportunities and financial resources, PEP will increase the earning capacity and spending power of targeted participants, which, in turn, will stimulate commercial activity.
