                                        Territory to be represented at Health Financing Meeting

    Roadtown, Tortola - Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Mrs. Ritzia Turnbull-Smith will represent the Virgin Islands (UK) at the Third Caribbean Social Security Meeting on National Health Financing Initiatives in Trinidad and Tobago next week.

     

    The objectives of the October 6-9 meeting include the exploring of challenges and strategies that impact the financing and administration of national health care programmes; and to examine critical issues influencing the design and sustainability of national health financing programmes globally and regionally.

    In addition the meeting will aim to highlight models of governance for successful health care programme administration in the Caribbean, and identify areas and opportunities for closer collaboration in tackling health financing concerns.

     

     While at the meeting, which is being hosted by the National Insurance Board of Trinidad and Tobago, Mrs. Turnbull-Smith is scheduled to participate in several presentations and discussions with counterparts from other Caribbean states.

     

    The Deputy Secretary will be a member of a panel with representatives from Anguilla, the Bahamas, Dominica, and the Turks and Caicos Islands to make a presentation entitled ‘Updates: Countries planning National Health Insurance or other health financing initiatives.”

     

    Mrs. Turnbull-Smith will also be featured as a panellist along with delegates from Anguilla, Bermuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Aruba, Curacao, and St. Maarten to discuss the topic ‘Challenges in providing health insurance coverage to migrant workers and non-nationals’.  ~~Adz:Right~~

     

    Representatives of the World Health Organization, the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre, the Pan American Health Organization, and the International Labour Organization are among those scheduled to make presentations during next week’s meeting.

     

    The subject of national health insurance was recently re-assigned from the portfolio of the Premier to the Minister of Health and Social Development.
