Three jailed; 12 fined EC$25 000 for various offences

    Key’s woman fined for stealing from C&C

     

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THREE men were sentenced to Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) with hard labour and 12 individuals were convicted and fined a total of EC$25 000 for offences ranging from larceny to possession of a controlled drug, according to a police press release.

     

    Tanja Fyfield of Shadwell Estate appeared at the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court charged with escaping lawful custody on November 11, 2012. He was convicted and sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour.

     

    Also appearing at the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court were Derrick Roland of Ponds Extension and John Gumbs of Pond Road, Newtown.

     

    Roland was sentenced to serve two months with hard labour at HMP after being convicted for assaulting an officer on August 24, 2012, while Gumbs was convicted and sentenced to 27 days imprisonment with hard labour for the use of threatening language committed on September 30, 2012.

     

    Three other individuals were also convicted at the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court – Sharon Parris of Key’s Village, Angad Silra of Sugar Bay Club and Travis Francis of Old Road.

     

    Parris was convicted for larceny by the servant of goods from employer C&C Super Foods at the Bay Road in Basseterre. The offence was committed October 10, 2012 and she was fined $2 000 which is to be paid in one month or, if in default, would have to spend six month in prison.

     

    She was also ordered to pay compensation of $3 000 to C&C in one month or spend six months in prison. In failure to pay the fines, her sentences will run consecutively.

     

    Silra and Francis were convicted and fined for traffic offences.

     

    Silra’s offences were failing to stop, failing to report an accident and driving without due care and attention in Frigate Bay on July 21, 2012.

     

    He was fined $100 for the first offence and $200 and $500, respectively, for the other two. He was required to pay all fines immediately after conviction, and failure to do so would have required him to serve one week in prison for the first offence, one month for the second and one week for the third.

     

    Francis was convicted for driving without insurance, driving unlicenced vehicle, failing to report an accident and failing to stop at an accident scene, all of which were committed on July 21, 2012.

     

    He was fined $1 000 for the first offence, $100 for the second and $100 for the fourth but was cautioned for failing to report an accident.

     

    Francis was given one week to pay the fine for the first offence and, if in default, will result in him serving one month in prison; one month to pay for the second offence or one week imprisonment, and one week to pay for the fourth offence or spend one month in prison.

     

    At the Sandy point Magistrate’s Court, Tyrone ‘Gibby’ Nisbett of Christ Church Village was convicted for the June 29, 2012 offences of driving without due care and attention and fined $1 000, which was to be paid by Tuesday (Dec. 18), or in default spend 14 days with hard labour at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    He was also disqualified from driving for three months with immediate effect and his driver’s licence was handed over to the police.

     

    Over on sister isle Nevis, two individuals were convicted for receiving, two for battery, two for drug-related offences and two for traffic offences.

     

    Gerald Browne and Jerrard Browne, both of Cotton Ground, were convicted for receiving; offences that were committed between April 26 and June 13, 2012. They were fined $5 000 each and ordered to pay the amount in three months or be guests at HMP for 18 months with hard labour.

     

    Natalee Jeffers of Mount Lily, New Castle was convicted for battery which was committed at New Castle on November 6, 2012. She was fined $500 to be paid within two months or be confined in prison for one month; while Shaw Chapman of Matchmans was convicted for a similar offence at Matchmans on July 6, 2012 and was fined $500 to be paid within three months or spend one month in prison with hard labour.

     

    For possession of cannabis, Micklay Mitcham of Jessups Village and Kevin Chapman of Brown Pasture were convicted and fined $1 000 each to be paid in six months or spend a similar amount of time in prison.

     

    Mitcham had committed the offence in Jessups on September 7, 2012, and Chapman at Zetlands on December 10, 2012.

     

    Sheldon Hawker of Burden Pasture was convicted for not being a holder of valid driver’s licence and driving without insurance. The offences were committed at Morning Star on November 27, 2012 at Morning Star.

     

    He was fined $500 for each offence and ordered to pay each within three months or spend two three-month terms at HMP with hard labour.

     

    And Sharian Tyrell of Brown Hill was convicted for driving without insurance, driving without due care and attention, driving without a valid licence and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, which were committed at Main Street, Charlestown on December 2, 2012.

     

    He was cautioned for driving without a valid licence; fined $5 000 for driving without insurance, which is to be paid in three months or one month imprisonment; $500 for driving without due care and attention, to be paid within three months or be confined in prison for one month; and $500 for failing to stop at the scene of an accident, which is to be paid in three months. All sentences are to be served with hard labour.
