Security officers on top of game for J’Ouvert 2012

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT is undoubtedly not an easy task for less than 100 individuals to police crowds comprising thousands of revellers, but this morning during the Sugar Mass 41 J’Ouvert Jam, members of the Federation’s Security Forces did so successfully and – according to reports –were able to ensure that an atmosphere of peace abounded during the event.

The pre-J’Ouvert event began around 3:00 a.m. for some revellers and even earlier – and by 5:30 a.m. it was in full swing with the various bands and hi-fi systems making their rounds along the prescribed route in the heart of Basseterre.

Representatives of the Delta Squad and other officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force were out in their numbers, making rounds through the different crowds, keeping a diligent eye out for potential outbreaks of violence.

SKNVibes observed at least two instances where persons who were jamming got into frays which were quickly disbanded, thanks to the alert officers. One individual – this publication also observed – was even stopped and asked to remove the knapsack which he was carrying and it was searched by the officers.

The four bands and two hi-fi systems, which provided entertainment for the fun-lovers, each appeared to have a contingent of officers attached to it although those with the larger following attracted more security personnel.

Also, as part of the safety and security regime for the event, a number of marshals were deployed to each band/hi-fi to ensure that revellers’ safety is maintained. The marshals’ chief duty – SKNVibes understands – was to ensure that the jammers did not revel too close to the tractors or trailers of their wheels.

Ivor Blake of the Security and Public Safety Committee for the Carnival told SKNVibes that there were 58 marshals deployed this year, which is a significant increase from last year’s number.

He also said from a security point of view that the J’Ouvert jam was a success.

“By and large, most people behaved. We were able to cut off any potential trouble because of the various security officers. We were able to quell situations before they could escalate and we did not have reports of any major incidents so far.

“The J’Ouvert morning went pretty well from a security stand point. There were no major incidents. We have a report of an injury but, other than that, all was well.”

The Carnival Security Head reminded the public that specific traffic restrictions have been put in place and advised that they must be adhered to.

“We also want to let the general public know that there are some traffic restrictions in downtown Basseterre and that they are to be complied with. Also, refrain from parking in restricted areas. This would allow for the free flow of traffic. We want everyone to enjoy themselves but do so in a responsible manner.

All – inclusive of Carnival Committee members, revellers and security forces – were congratulated by Blake for their contribution to the success of the event and noted that he is looking forward to continued partnership in that regard.
