Crowned National Calypso Monarch for sixth time

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CALYPSONIANS in St. Kitts and Nevis were left winded after King Konris took them ‘By De Breath’ and captured his sixth National Carnival Senior Calypso Monarch title and remains undefeated in the competition since his debut in 2005.

In front of approximately 4 000 patrons at the Sugar Mill in Warner Park, King Konris amassed 864 points, beating his nearest competitor by some 78 points.

The First Runner-up position went to first time finalist Rudder with 786 points, while Singing Jackie tallied 728 to capture the Second Runner-up position and veteran calypsonian Big Lice was adjudged Third Runner-up with 723 points.

In the first round, King Konris sang the tune ‘Finish the Song’ and had the majority of patrons in the stand singing along with him, as he turned the pages of a large book that was mounted on stage which he called the “Lyrics Book”.

And in the second round he performed his popular selection, ‘By De Breath’, where he showcased his superiority over the other competitors and even had patrons who were not in support of him standing and singing along with him as he dropped some heavy lyrics.

An extra verse was even added to that song after King Konris was the subject of harsh words coming from Singing Jackie and Big Lice.

At the end of the show not a single individual left the Sugar Mill in disagreement with the judges’ decision of who was the Monarch, but many of them had varying views for whom they felt should have filled the other places.

The other competitors on the evening's show were Ace, Craig, Godfrey, I-Soursop and Lady Diva.

A moment of silence was observed at the start of the show in honour of those individuals who had played significant roles in the art form over the years but are no longer alive.

Among those contributors were Singing Angie, King of the 29 Fellas, Dr. Croft and Dwayne Sturge.

The National Carnival Committee also honoured Crieghton Pension and DJ Ronnie Rascal for the contributions they made to Carnival over the years.

The show concluded just after 1:00 a.m. this morning (Dec. 29) shortly after the results were announced by Master of Ceremonies Calypso Reggie.
