~~Adz:Right~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN light of the widespread power outages throughout the island and the increased criminal activity noted in the past few weeks, police officials have given their assurance that the nation’s security forces will be fully employed for systematic mobile and foot patrol.

Public Relations Coordinator of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Constable Ervin Williams informed SKNVibes that the patrols would be carried out on a “broad basis” and will be concentrated on government facilities as well as commercial and residential districts.

He added that the initiative was primarily undertaken as a proactive measure to maintain a high level of national security and not as a response to any perceived increase in crime.

“Let me make it clear: there is no direct relationship between power outages and crime. In fact, there has not been an increase in crime as a result of the loss of electricity. We cannot afford to put people in panic because, the fact is, people commit crime everyday, regardless of whether electricity is on or off. So there is no need to be alarmed.

“We are asking people to remain ever-vigilant and cautious. If you are walking and you don’t feel safe, don’t take any chances; walk in groups and do not go out alone. Nothing is happening, but we just want to be cautious. Don’t ever try to be your own superhero because it won’t work out in your best interest.”

Constable Williams indicated that the security forces may be contacted to assist anyone in any risky or unsafe situation as he maintained that the police are “fully equipped and fully ready” to ensure the safety and security of citizens during the temporary electricity outages.
