BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CHARLESTOWN SECONDARY SCHOOL’s Sixth Former Agiel Browne was declared the Federation’s 2008 State Scholar; a scholastic award given to the student who achieves the best performance over a two-year period in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).

According to a Ministry of Education press release, Browne achieved nine Grade Ones over the 2007 and 2008 examination period in the areas of Caribbean Studies, Accounting Units 1 and 2, Management of Business Units 1 and 2, Economics Unit1, Information Technology Unit 1, Pure Mathematics Unit 1 and Communication Studies.

The First and Second Runners-up are Azard Gumbs of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College and Florelle Hobson of the Charlestown Secondary School Sixth Form respectively. Both candidates attained five Grades Ones during the examination period.

However, in accordance with the established criteria for determining the State Scholar’s ranking, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) computed T scores for both Gumbs and Hobson to break the tie.

Gumbs’ T score was determined to be 464 while that of Hobson’s was a mere one point less. He is therefore the Runner-up State Scholar for 2008.

In response to the news, Gumbs said he was pleased that his hard work in school had paid off and he wished to thank his family and his teachers for their support.  ~~Adz:Right~~

Congratulations were extended by the Ministry of Education to Browne and the Runners-up for their achievement.
