Roadtown, Tortola - Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE today signed a $1.2 million contract on behalf of the Government with Mr. Ashley Ritter of Tortola Concrete Products Limited for road improvement work on Anegada.

Under the contract, the company will provide 4,513 cubic yards of ready mix concrete with fibre for the paving of six portions of road on the sister island.

At today’s signing ceremony, Premier O’Neal said the awarding of that magnitude contract to a local company is indicative of Government’s confidence in the ability of locals.

“We cannot afford in this day and age to have contracts like these and not allow our people to participate in their execution,” the Premier said adding that “we must have our people participating and especially our people who have proven themselves.”

Honourable O’Neal noted that Anegada has a lot of potential and projects such as these lay the groundwork for future development. Despite the global economic situation, a better day is coming and it is the responsibility of Government to prepare for the future.

“Some of these works will help to bring that development that we so long to see, development that will not destroy the island but the type of development that will suit an island like Anegada.”

I have seen and we all have seen some of the work that he has done around here and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be able to complete the job to his satisfaction and to our satisfaction and to the satisfaction of the people on Anegada.”

Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser, RA who witnessed the signing described it as a “bold initiative” and commended the Premier for demonstrating what he termed “the true spirit of representation” and bringing development to Anegada.

“I visited Anegada a few months ago and what I saw was a people and an island, who are quite deserving of every bit of attention that is being given from our end and I am sure they will be quite pleased with the effort that is being undertaken by the Premier,” Honourable Fraser said.

The Minister also expressed confidence in the contractor. “I want to commend Mr. Ritter for stepping up and coming through with this project. I am confident that the standards he has already set here paving roads for us, he will continue with on Anegada paving roads.”

In brief remarks, Mr. Ritter thanked the Premier and Minister for Communications and Works for their confidence in him. “I look forward now to working with the people of Anegada to complete this project as soon as possible.” Mr. Ritter confirmed that the project will start on October 25 and is scheduled for completion by December 15.
