BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EIGHTY-SIX pupils of the Tucker Clarke Primary School were yesterday (Oct 9) honoured at the institution’s Pupil Awards Ceremony for attaining the best academic performance in their respective grades.

The ceremony, held once every term to honour the students from each grade who attain the best academic grades over the period, was initiated following the launching of a programme in 2006 which has served as a motivator for students to improve their scholastic performance.

“We have to keep the children focused on education so that they’re not lead astray or get attracted to the wrong company. The community that surrounds us is considered to be one of the more gang-friendly areas, so we must implement activities so that our children can become better students and better citizens”, said Sylvester Charles, Principal of the school.

The ceremony also featured school-grown talent and was evidenced in the recital of a poem by Grade Six pupil Philmon Roberts, entitled “Let’s Celebrate”, an ode to the Federation’s Silver Jubilee Independence Anniversary, while dancers from Grade Three performed energetically to the local classic “Liamuiga Border-Line” by Crucial Bankie.

The featured speaker was past student Carolyn Adams, a Credit Officer at the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank.

She spoke about ways in which one could achieve success, including setting goals, being self-motivated, reading more often, becoming involved in extracurricular activities and having respect for themselves and for others.

In a message to the parents, Principal Charles said, “We have to continue to encourage our children to stay in school and work hard. We must teach them the right values and support them positively so that they can become insightful, wholesome individuals.”
