School Meals Programme Undergoes Strategic Restructuring

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, January 29th, 2013  --  A brand new approach to School Meals preparation and management is expected to usher in new mindsets among its preparation team and its main clients, the students.

A team of officials from the CARICOM UWI-McGill Food Security Project-Community Nutrition and Health Subtheme, recently completed a working visit in which they observed the school meals operation at the intervention schools and the school meals center.

Headed by Dr. Isabella Granderson, the team also conducted monitoring and evaluation exercises and assisted in the implementation of some standard operating procedures to facilitate proper reporting.

Dr. Granderson met with and trained the newly employed Nutrition Assistants who are required to perform a specialized function as part of the School Meals Programme. They are charged with the responsibility to monitor the administration and service of lunch as well as supervise the children as they eat.

Nutrition Assistants are also responsible for the investigation of complaints regarding faulty preparation, sub-standard quality of ingredients, menus and other areas of concern.

In order to ensure that the quality of food is kept high in safety and sanitation practices, a Quality Assurance Assistant has also been identified and is undergoing training.

Other key components of the new School Meals Programme restructuring process are menu modification, improved food service equipment, and advanced training at every level of the school meals service team.

Dr. Granderson, at the completion of her eight-day working visit, felt confident that there would be a much improved product as well as happier students, parents and school meals employees when all the components of the new structure are implemented.

The initial intervention schools for the pilot programme are Beach Allen, St. Pauls, Saddlers and Edgar T. Morris Primary Schools.
