CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – MEMBERS of the Nevis Division of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and representatives of the Nevis Disaster Preparedness Office yesterday afternoon relocated the 47 illegal immigrants to the Community Centre on Hanley’s Road.
Speaking with the media today, Nevis’ Premier the Hon. Joseph Parry informed that contact was made with relatives of some of the illegal immigrants from Haiti and they had offered to assist in funding their return to that country.
SKNVibes has also learnt that the vessel in which the immigrants arrived on Nevis was bound for the United States of America.
It was reported that on Sunday, October 19, police officers on Nevis found and apprehended 47 illegal immigrants, including 35 males, 10 females and two children, in the vicinity of Long Point.
They were held in custody at the Charlestown Police Station up to yesterday afternoon, as stakeholders, including a senior immigration official from St. Kitts, convened for a meeting on the situation in one of the offices of the Nevis Island Administration in Bath Plains.
According to Superintendent Samuel Seabrookes, Head of the Nevis Division, the vessel in which they were travelling apparently crashed into the rocks at Long Point.
He also told this media house that the majority of the immigrants are from Haiti while the others are from Cuba and Peru.
