                                   Ivan Dawson Memorial Scholarship 2008 recipient named

    Tortola, BVI - The Ivan Dawson Memorial Scholarship Committee recently named 11 year-old Marciel Clyne as its 2008 recipient. Marciel, the eighth scholarship recipient, is also the valedictorian of the 2008 graduating class of the Ivan Dawson Primary School.

     

    Marciel, who is now a student at the Elmore Stoutt High School, received trophies and awards for her scholastic achievements including the Ivan Dawson Memorial Trophy for Valedictorian. Marciel is the daughter Mr. Denzil and Mrs. Modesta Clyne of Towers, West End.  The scholarship was presented by Mrs. Jacqueline Richardson, daughter of the late Ivan Dawson.

     

    Marciel, aspires to become a business woman. She is encouraging her fellow students to SOAR - Strive for excellence; Obey the rules; Ask for assistance and Read, read, read. 

    The Ivan Dawson Scholarship Committee congratulates Marciel and wishes her God’s blessings as she continues on the road of excellence. 

     

    The scholarship is named in honour of the late Mr. Ivan Dawson, OBE, CBE, who was born on March 1, 1914 in Ballast Bay, Tortola and died on April 22, 2001 after 40 years of public service. In 1957 he was elected un-opposed as the Cane Garden Bay District representative to the Legislative Council.

     

    He was re-elected in 1960 and 1963. From 1975 to 1983, he served as Speaker of the 8th and 9th Legislature. 

    He served the Territory in the capacity of Deputy Chief Minister, Minister of Natural Resources and Public Health and as Nominated Member and Deputy Speaker. In honour of his years of service the Cane Garden Bay Primary School was re-named the Ivan Dawson Primary School. He retired from active public service in 1983.
