BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 27TH 2008 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has re-affirmed his governing Labour Party’s on-going commitment to serve the people of the twin-island Federation.

“We re-affirm our ongoing commitment to meet - with vision, with vigilance, and with vigour - the sacred responsibilities that you have placed on our shoulders as leaders of our Party, as Leaders of our Communities and Constituencies, as Members of Parliament and Members of the Cabinet of Ministers,” said Prime Minister Douglas at a Service of Thanksgiving at the Half Way Tree Methodist Church on Sunday to mark the Party’s Election Anniversary.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Douglas, who is also the National Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party noted that it was on October 25, 2004, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis  went to the polls.

“We went to the polls to exercise that sacred and precious right that the founders of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party had bravely won for every man and every woman in St. Kitts and Nevis – the right to vote.

We went to the polls – all of us - regardless of race or religion, regardless of status or standing, regardless of party or creed, to decide, together, who would establish the nation’s priorities…..who would be responsible for the education of our children……who would ensure the continued progress and development of our land. We went to the polls – as one people - to choose our government,” said Dr. Douglas.

He pointed out that regular and orderly choosing of a government is something that, in countries like St. Kitts and Nevis “is

A section of the large congregation leaving the service
sometimes easy to take for granted.”

“But perhaps we should, at times like this, pause for a moment and reflect that in many countries this sense of order and regularity does not exist.

And in the process of this reflection we should be able to see ourselves more clearly……and we will recognise and take a calm pride in the sense of responsibility, the sense of maturity, the overall seriousness with which we, as a people, have created and nurtured our very special democracy,” said Prime Minister Douglas, adding: “Like water and air, the regular and orderly choosing of a government is essential to life as we know it.  It is precious. It is sacred.”

He told the large congregation that it was “with deep gratitude and honoured humility that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, based on the will of the people in 2004, stepped forward to once again to form the Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

“And so today on this special occasion, in this very special place, we thank you, we thank you the people for the extraordinary honour. I thank God for his countless mercies on us all, and seek his guidance in ensuring that, together, as one people, we continue to work to protect and build this nation that is our home, our Land of Beauty, our Land that we all love so much,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

The two and a half hours service was conducted by Methodist Minister, Rev. Joyce Rohan and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Political Leader of the Labour Party, Hon. Sam Condor; Cabinet Ministers and Executive Officers of the Labour Party, the President and Executive Officers of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, The Speaker of the National Assembly, The Ambassadors of the Republic of China on Taiwan, the Republic of Venezuela and the Republic of Cuba, the Representative of the Organisation of American States and other members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps and hundreds of residents. Also attemding were the Labour Party's candidates for Constituencies #2, 4 and %, Ms. Marcella Liburd; Mr. Glenn "Ghost" Phillip and Dr. Norgen Wilson respectively.
