St. Vincent and the Grenadines reaches 29-year milestone

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – St. Vincent and the Grenadines celebrated its 29th Anniversary of Independence yesterday, October 27, with much splendour and excitement as they reflected on the progress and development made in the territory.

According to Caribbean Net News, Sir Frederick Ballantyne, the island’s Governor General, highlighted the increase in crime and the present global economic downturn as the two main challenges that the nation has faced.

He urged all Vincentians to “seek new ways to build on the foundation which has made us proud as a successful nation”.

The report also stated that the island’s Prime Minster, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves in his Independence message reflected on some of the major infrastructural changes made over the last 29 years.

~~Adz:Right~~ He referenced the construction of a jet airport, the commencement of the International Airport and of six schools, a modern Medical Complex and a modern national library complex and opined that they represent the country’s vast development.

Gonsalves also spoke out against those whom he said were “bent on criminality and vagabondry” saying there were also a few who should know better yet engaged in mischief and unpatriotic acts.

The country’s celebrations began with its 29th Annual Independence Day Parade at the Victoria Park, and continued with a Kool Riderz Island Ride and Parade and Caribbean Cycling Competition. The day culminated in a grand concert in Heritage Square featuring Trinidad and Tobago’s WITCO Desperados.

The country continues the Independence Anniversary celebrations with a five-day Heritage Youth Arts Festival held at the National Trust Headquarters slated to begin today, October 28, and the Annual Youth Awards Ceremony to be held on October 30. Their month of celebrations will also feature the opening of Theatre Arts Festival Month on October 31.
