BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN keeping with its commitment to academic excellence, the TDC Group of Companies presented the inaugural Michael L. King Scholarship Grant to four citizens of the Federation pursuing university studies.

The event was held at the organisation’s training room, Fort Street, Basseterre on Monday, October 27.
The scholarship recipients were Justin Johnson and Shaline Welcome from St. Kitts, while Janesha Daniel and Shelissa Smithen were the Nevisian winners. They each received a US$5 000 grant towards their pursuit of further education.

The handing over ceremony was chaired by TDC Human Resources Manager Dennis Knight and was attended by representatives from the company, the Ministry of Education and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College.

The scholarship opportunity is open to citizens of the Federation who meet criteria such as being a full-time student at a tertiary-level institution, studying a business-related subject area and demonstrating an interest in returning to the Federation upon the completion of their studies.

Twenty-two applications were received by the Scholarship Board, which further assessed candidates on their past and present extra-curricular activities, academic achievements, future plans and the relevance of their courses to national development.

Osmond Petty, Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry, commended TDC for the initiative and stating that they had identified candidates “who possessed some level of need and rewarded them for their academic achievement”. Company Chairman Michael Morton described the ceremony as “another proud moment in the history of TDC”.

“A country’s greatest resource is its people and thus it is imperative that people be empowered to fulfil their potential. TDC has always recognised this and has constantly committed itself to achieving this objective,” the Chairman added.

The Board plans to award four grants annually and will invite applications for next year’s candidates by June 2009.
